"The Island delivers a real links test - unforgiving but always fair. This is one to delight even the most experienced links aficionado, so if you miss this beauty, you will be missing a real treat."

Golf Digest

Article written by David Owen - Contributing editor, Gold Digest.

One of my favourite courses anywhere is the Island, in Donabate, Ireland, a few miles north of Dublin. It's fourteenth hole - which may be the world's most intimidating short par 4 - is called Old Clubhouse, because  the old clubhouse use to stand where the tee box does today. In fact, the teeing ground is framed by the old foundation. And the club is called the Island because that's what it looked like to the original members who got to it by rowing across the estuary of the River Broadmeadow from Malahide, where golf-playing on Sundays was forbidden.

Hooked

Kevin Markham released his book "Hooked" in the summer this year. This is a great guide to Ireland's golf courses. The Island receives a great score of 90 out or 100. Click here to read an extract from the book about the Island.

Pure Golf 2010

In September we were lucky enough to have two New Zealanders, Jamie & Michael play the Island who were playing 365 courses in 365 days. Below is an extract from their blog.
“Golf on our second to last day was at The Island Golf Course.  The Island flies a little under the radar and was not on our initial itinerary.  This was a mistake.  The Island course is one of the top ranked links in Ireland is only 15 minutes from Dublin and in a word, is pure.  Old fashioned and real golf this links course sits amongst the dunes across the estuary from Malahide and just north of Portmarnock.  In the old days the golfers would jump in their wee boats across from Malahide to play on an out and back layout starting from what is now the 14th hole.  The par three 13th is a stunning hole played out to the end of the spit with the township of Malahide as the backdrop.”

"This is one of the most enjoyable courses I have every played and certainly the best links I’ve visited. All holes are memorable; there is virtually no two holes the same. The high dunes give a unique appearance to the course. Holes 13-18 are particularly challenging.

After the golf, I recommend tasting the Guinness at this homely Club, which i look forward to returning to."
