Darren's Island Storm 15th October 1999 (excerpt from Irish Independent)
If Thursday's round of 70 was "stunningly average"in Darren Clarke's opinion, the big Dungannon man could afford to give himself higher marks out of ten after a blistering 63 for a new course record at The Island Golf Club and the outright lead in The Smurfit Irish PGA Championship. [8 under par]
A key to his score was his long and accurate driving "I just got a bit more aggressive on a couple of the par 4's, but I've been playing like this all year. I just holed more putts today" said Clarke. Typical of his length off the tee were his drives on the 340 yards fourth hole and the 330 yards sixth hole. In each case he almost drove the hole and they yielded two of the eight birdies he scored. The eagle was scored on the par five 15th hole. Clarke used a driver and a 3 wood to 15 feet and holed the putt.
The Course Amateur Record is currently held by Eoin O'Sullivan who is a member of the Island Golf Club. Eoin scored 65 on the 28th of July 2007.
